Doane Rock: The Largest Glacial Boulder on Cape Cod

Off Season Cape Cod Activities

One of the most interesting off-season Cape Cod attractions sits majestically in the National Seashore. Standing 18-feet high, Doane Rock is Cape Cod’s largest glacial boulder – and it’s a sight worth seeing.

The History of Doane Rock

Glaciers played an important role in much of the regions geology. Most of Cape Cod’s numerous freshwater ponds are kettle ponds, formed by the retreating glaciers. The boulders found randomly across Cape Cod are also the result of glacial activity. Doane Rock is believed to be the largest of the glacial boulders on the Cape and possibly the largest in southeastern New England.

Easy Accessibility

Doane Rock was named for Deacon John Doane, one of the first settlers in Eastham MA.

There is a wheelchair accessible paved loop path from the Doane Rock parking lot, which also takes visitors into the pine forest surrounding the rock. A small picnic area, with wheelchair friendly tables is nestled in the trees nearby – a perfect spot to relax in the warm weather months.
