Cape Cod Spring Festivals in Full Swing

Cape Cod Spring Festival Season Begins in April

Ahh Spring. It’s a season for beautiful blooms and new beginnings. It’s also the time of year when Cape Cod kicks it up a notch with a line-up of fun festivals. Get out the sun hats and suntan lotion, because here is a round up of five springtime celebrations you won’t want to miss on Cape Cod:

1. Nantucket Daffodil Festival (April)

The tiny island welcomes spring on a grand scale, with three million daffodils in bloom and a three-day celebration to show them off in style. Now in its 41st year, the festival includes a family picnic at Children’s Beach (that is, if you can ever get the kids away from the free rides on the antique fire truck), Nantucket Garden Club Daffodil Show, an island-wide scavenger hunt, 5K race, and huge used book sale. The Antique Car (plus tailgate party), Daffy Hat, dog and kids parades keep spring marching in all weekend long.

2. Brewster in Bloom (May)

Route 6A is a treasure at any time of year, but it bursts into action for Brewster in Bloom weekend, with hundreds of daffodils along the way and a weekend of family activities that help raise money for the Elder Brewster Scholarship Fund for local students. Events include a Bloom Run, closest-to-the-pin contests at Captains Golf Course, self-guided arts and antique tours at local galleries, a band concert and Kid Fest at Drummer Boy Park, inn tours, and a juried arts and crafts show at Cape Cod Sea Camps. The weekend culminates in the Bloomin’ Parade hosted by the Brewster Inn and Woodshed; this year’s theme is “Honey Bee Good.” Praise bees!

3. Cape Cod Maritime Days
Somewhere among the clam shacks, golf days, band concerts, and beach picnics of summer, you just might forget about the roots of this coastal community. The month-long Maritime Days celebration is a perfect reminder; now in its 22nd year, the event features guided kayak excursions, lighthouse and walking tours, nautical art exhibit, and a maritime history symposium at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.  You will never yearn more for a life by the sea.

4. The Rhododendron Festival at Heritage Museum & Gardens (May)

Or gaze at thousands of rhododendrons in bloom. The week-long festival (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, free with museum at admission) includes walking tours, pruning demos, care talks, and a rare species tour (on May 22 at 1 p.m.), but the rhodys always manage to steal the show.

5. 21st Father’s Day Auto Show (June)

The sight of traffic stopped along Main Street is never sweeter than during the annual auto show, featuring rare, antique, classic and muscle cars on proud display. There are kid’s games, prizes, a craft fair, and discounts at local restaurants and shops, but even non-enthusiasts may fall for a vintage convertible or sleek 70s Charger. You may even gain new appreciation for the wheels you drive every day.  Ah, spring.
