Exploring Cape Cod Roots on the Hopper House Tour

Hopper House Tours Cape Cod

One of the little-known tours on Cape Cod is close by in the towns of Wellfleet and Truro,  where Lisbeth Chapman gives an extraordinary 2-hour lesson on the life and work of artist Edward Hopper.

Deep Devotion

Hopper’s devotion to New England, especially Cape Cod, ran deep. Hopper arrived on Cape Cod with his wife, Josephine, in 1930 and they would spend almost half of his 84 summers there, in their classic Cape house with a large window overlooking Fisher Beach. Right up until his death in 1967, the Cape is where he would go to paint what became some of his most famous works, including “Cape Cod Sunset,” “Corn Hill,” “Seven A.M.,” and “Gas.” In total, he painted more than a hundred oils and watercolors depicting the Cape, including one in 1946 titled “October on Cape Cod” that sold at auction last year for $9.6 million.

Insightful Tours

For Cape Codders, pointing out the dunes, beachfront homes, towering church spires, and sweeping landscapes that Hopper painted has a sport of sorts. Identifying Hopper’s subjects is also a passion for Lisbeth Chapman, who has researched the houses and vistas painted by Edward Hopper in Wellfleet and Truro in the early 1930s.

Hopper – Then and Now

Chapman offers, what she calls, a year-round “then and now” tour.  You can join her for a two-hour car ride over back roads and to out-of-the-way places to visit the houses and vistas Hopper painted as they are today.  Much of the Truro and Wellfleet that Edward Hopper painted retains its 1930s flavor.  She will entertain you with personal family anecdotes and information about where he lived for four summers in a summer rental cottage from 1930 to 1933 before moving to his own studio.

All tours start at Wellfleet Town Pier, with free parking on the Pier between Mac’s Seafood and the Harbormaster’s Office.  The tour includes locations of four paintings in Wellfleet, and 26 paintings in South Truro.
